New york was introduced to this work in 1913 during the armory show. Shown a bit at stieglitz"s gallery in 1909, gallery called 291. Has had an exhibition of picasso there, this is where you see the cutting edge of avant garde in 19-teens. Radical statement that the american modernist can choose whatever medium they want and make modern art. Watercolor can be high art just as oil paint. The modern striking, novel idea is grappling with the capturing of the city. The human being is there to grapple with the warring, pulling, John marin movement, fifth avenue 1912 pushing forces.
