Brunelleschi, alberti, and visual story telling lecture. Florence saw ancient rome as a prototype for republican government. Florence cathedrals maintain several elements of earlier naves in churches. One notable difference is the lack of flying buttresses and the inclusion of stone patterning on the exterior. The way of salvation by firenze depicts what the florence cathedral was envisioned to look like. Filippo brunelleschi"s dome of duomo (santa maria del fiore) solved the problem of what to add to the cathedral"s octagonal design. Brunelleschi learned from ancient roman architecture notably the pantheon, but uses an octagonal vault instead. The inner shell is supported by 8 vertical ribs with a series of horizontal ribs. Brunelleschi used a crane and scaffolding to first construct the inner shell followed by the outer shell. The dome uses a zigzag pattern to support keystone points. Cylindrical rings are used like a barrel for support. Alberti argued that the dome"s design surpassed that of the ancients.
