Zhou was the primary architect behind the meeting between mao and nixon. He emerged as a guiding force in the late mao era. Following his death, publications were released under the guise of criticizing confucius and lin piao (it was believed that the political left was using confucius as a metaphor for zhou). Following mao"s death, the gang of four was arrested under the accusation of attempting to stage a coup. Succeeding these leaders was hua guofeng (1976 to 1981), who was quickly succeeded by deng xiaoping (who had maintained influence in the military). Student protesters were suppressed by the military during the new authoritarian era. Mao had hated shanghai for its commercial and anti- modern elements. In the 1990s, shanghai"s economic influence was restored, or renewed. 2013, the president of the prc has been xi jinping. His background was in political science and his agenda has been largely ideologically-driven.
