Document Summary
Biopsychosocial model in fields of health psychology and behavior medicine. Health is more than just lack of disease. Biological factors: genetics, physiology, age, immune system, nutrition, medication. Psychological factors: emotions, beliefs, personality, coping, risky behaviors, health behaviors, social support, stress. Emotional stress induces more robust stress responses than physical stimuli. Stress = mismatch between demands of situation and resources. E. g. too much homework, too little time. Stressor = specific event or chronic pressure. E. g. the homework itself, the upcoming deadline, etc. Acute (short-lasting) vs. chronic stressors (occur continuously or repeatedly) Changes in how people look, act, or talk. Set points for body temperature, blood sugar, blood pressure, etc. Disruption requires compensation to return to steady state. Allostasis - the more dynamic process through which homeostasis is achieved. The body"s response attempts to bring things into balance. Same response to variety of stimuli: non-specificity of stress response wear and tear. Response depends on how you process/perceive event.
