Allport and cattell (and the recent current trait theories) popularized an inductive approach to understanding personality. Traits used as an adjective, but also presumed to be. Dispositional - internal, so some strong focus on biology (although environment may have an effect) Bipolar - from low to high, or from one trait to another - the language of opposites. Addictive and independent - combined like a recipe. E. g. values, attitudes, world views, schemas, intelligence. Describe people in terms of a number of behavior-determining tendencies (on a continuum) Something that makes us try to do something more or less. Started by talking about traits, but didn"t like the connotation, so talked about. A generalized and focalized neuropsychic system (peculiar to the individual) with the capacity to render many stimuli functionally equivalent and to initiate and guide consistent (equivalent) forms of adaptive and expressive behavior . Can be inferred through consistencies in behavior. Do class assignments on time (plan ahead)
