Responding to Objections and Alternatives
Acknowledge Reader's Concerns
-Shows that you are aware of readers' point of view and take it seriously even if you do not agree.
-You can address readers directly, list possible objections, discuss each one.
-Readers respond positively, makes you seem thoughtful and reasonable.
-Research subject and readers. Helps you be a better peer editor too.
Concede readers' concern
-You may decide to go beyond just acknowledging. You may want to accept some of your readers' concerns and
incorporate them into your own argument.
-Can disarm readers. Recognizes that opposition views have merit
-Try to avoid a grudging tone.
Refuting readers' objections
-Assert that readers' objections are wrong then argue against them
Avoid an arrogant or defensive tone
-State objection fully and fairly. Refute with restrained tone and careful argument.
-When done well, a reader can disagree with a refutation while still agreeing that the refutation is well reasoned
and supported.
