Most scientist believe it a developmental neurocognitive disorder. Professor at syracuse believes it is a motor disorder. Motor disorder: help the kid use hand, they would write emotional letters to their family members. Would type the word that the facilitator was seeing. Facilitators were communicators, autistic kids were not the communicators. Prefrontal lobotomy: severed frontal lobe with the rest of the brain- symptoms subsided. Personal observation report: takes reports after surgery (extraordinary claim) Non-targeted change in behavior: no symptoms of schizophrenia changed, other behaviors have. Ruling out rival hypotheses: treatment for schizophrenia, rival: it will have some affect on behavior. Scientific method: toolbox of skills to systematically examine the truth (and help us to not fool ourselves) Theory can never be really proven but hypothesis can be confirmed. Not perfect but best set guards against bias and other errors based on intuitive. If hypotheses are confirmed: more confidence in theory thinking. Experimental design (study table 2. 1 on page 48)
