What did you learn about answering the question, how do i assess a student"s. Understand the terrors and limitations of formal language testing. What is the difference between language in use and language in testing? . Language in testing is more of a formal operation. Language in use is more of a carefree environment: hand gestures, slang, body language, etc. Assess the literacy skills in their primary language in order to know where to begin. Find something they are interested in to help them open up conversation. Be understanding of their culture (cultural understanding) it helps build a safe place for them and gives you both something to talk about. Be understanding that it takes time to translate for them don"t pressure them, take your time, don"t judge.
