Document Summary

Digestion: the process of breaking down large food molecules into smaller molecules for cell use. Metabolism : sum of all chemical reactions in the body. Anabolic metabolism : the building up of substances into more complex molecules uses atp. Catabolic metabolism :-the breakdown of complex molecules into simpler substances to produce atp. Chemical digestion : enzymatic reactions that alter the chemical composition of food molecules. Mechanical digestion : physical breaking of food molecules into smaller molecules. Absorption: process of moving final products into the blood or lymph for delivery to cells. Your body needs to have these broken down into their simplest forms for cell use. This is done through both mechanical (breaking physical bonds) and chemical (breaking chemical bonds through enzymes) digestive processes. You take your first bite and begin to chew in a process known as mastication. You mix the food with saliva and turn it into a bolus.
