PHL 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Ontological Argument, Cosmological Argument, Atomism
Document Summary
Assumption that the universe is a structure. Sees the patterns in the heaven and assumes it must be divinely created. Spoiler alert, those patterns are actually because of the earth"s rotation and orbit. All un-intelligent bodies must be moved to an end by a mover. We know this because they act in a predictable, patterned way. Note: this is a way better argument than cicero because it"s more general and can be adapted. Like even though the theory of evolution is now accepted, we can still accept. God as the dude who designed natural selection. A priori: argument independent of experience (often in math) A posteriori: following from experience - evidence (design argument) In order to have a strong analogy, you need as many similarities as possible. Weaken the comparison and you weaken the argument. Looks - a clock doesn"t look like the universe.
