Fertilization: two weeks into a woman"s period, she releases an egg, the egg travels down the fallopian tube towards the uterus and meets a sperm cell. Fertilization: the egg meets the sperm to form one cell: as the cell travels down the fallopian tube to the uterus it rapidly divides. Stages of prenatal development: germinal period: first 2 weeks, embryonic period: weeks 3-8. Fetal period: week 8-birth: may also be broken down into trimesters. Germinal period: mass of dividing cells (blastocyst) floats into the uterus and hangs out a couple days, while floating, the cells learn what their jobs will be within the body (cell. Blastocyst starts to turn into a being (sort of starts to look like a human) Placenta, umbilical cord and amniotic sac begin to mature and function. Embryonic structure forms 3 layers of cells. Thin line (primitive streak) starts to develop down the middle of the embryo.
