Document Summary

Sociability: ability to talk to and engage in activities with other people. Much of sociability is developed through play with peers. Four stages of play development (mildred parten): solitary: by self, exploring the world. Early childhood: large increase in interactive play, at beginning most children in associative play, then cooperative play around 4-5 years old. Stages do not replace each other, and children use all types: certain nonsocial behaviors (wandering, watching peers without playing, repetitive motor behavior) often lead to peer rejection. Typically at least 1/3 of a child"s play is nonsocial, so no cause for concern if child is not social all the time: negotiation and compromise during play results in greater social, emotional, and moral development. May be adaptive for establishing a dominance hierarchy, which limits hostility. Play opportunities: more cognitively and socially mature play in mixed-age situations, more intense and cooperative play in same-age situations.
