MUSC 222 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Gibson Les Paul, Fender Stratocaster, Acoustic Guitar
Document Summary
1950s: 4b6 players: (drums, acoustic bass, 2 electric guitars (rhythm and lead), piano (acoustic), saxophone (alto or tenor). 1960"s: (beatles): guitar(s), electric bass, drums. (sometimes + piano/keys) Motown: vocal group with harmonies, + orchestral accompaniment (like a big band). Disco used some orchestral instruments (strings and horns). Basic rock line-up remains: voice, el, guitar, el. Designed to make the signal of an electric guitar louder so that it will produce sound through a loudspeaker. Modifies instrument"s tone by emphasizing or de-emphasizing certain frequencies and adding electronic effects. Consist of one or more circuit stages which have unique responsibilities in modification of input signal. Power amplifier (or output stage) produces a high current signal to drive a speaker to produce more sound. Preamplifier precedes power amplifier stage, amplifying guitar signal to a level that can drive the power stage. May use vacuum tubes and/or transistor devices. Basic pickups that converted string vibrations into electrical energy.
