Ivan and his successors gradually enlarged their kingdom by purchase, way, trickery, and clever marriages. The prince of moscow became czar: russian state became a true empire during the reign of ivan iii (1462-1505) 1472- married the niece of the last byzantine emperor. At the time, he began calling himself czar, the russian word for caesar or emperor: 1480: moscow freed itself from mongol yoke. Mongols originally wanted to fight moscow at the ugra river. However, because both sides were on opposite banks, and the neither wanted to cross the river, both marched back home.
