ANSC 340 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Glans Penis, Leydig Cell, Sertoli Cell
Document Summary
Spermatogonia- divide to become sperm (not motile yet) Sertoli cells: analogous to granulosa cell of follicle (in female) Produces androgen binding protein (protein that transports testosterone) Inhibin: reduces fsh (negative feedback; as testosterone increases, fsh and gnrh decreases. Fsh and gnrh get too low, testosterone levels are brought back up) As sperm moves from head to tail of epididymis: Cytoplasmic droplet is lost (location of droplet gives clue of where potential damage may be) As ejaculate number increases, spermatozoa per ejaculate decreases. V big and must be trained to use artificial vagina, so usually electroejaculator is used. Filiform appendage on glans penis (shoots around like a crazy water sprinkler and gets all over) Semen: small volume, high concentration (must be quick to avoid predators) Semen: large volume, low concentration (less sensitive to the environment; can sit in a classroom for a week and still have some living)
