Sources of Personality Psychology Data
Types of Data
-Self-Report Data
*imitations: people may not respond honestly, people may lack accurate self-
knowledge
-Observer- Report Data (O-Data)
* Naturalistic observation allows the observer to view someone in their natural
setting. But, there is no control
* Artificial observation allows for more control of the setting but is not the
person’s natural setting
-Test Data (T-Data)
*Information derived from standardized tests or testing situation
*limitation:
1. Participants might try to guess intention of research then skew the data
2. Difficult to know if participants define testing situations as intended by
experimenter
3. Researcher might influence how participants behave
*physiological data: information about levels of reactivity to stimuli that are
indicators of personality using fMRI
*projective technique: person presented with ambiguous stimuli then asked to
describe what they perceived. The person “projects” their personality onto stimuli
-Life-Outcome Data
*Information derived from events, activities, and outcomes in a person’s life that
is available for public scrutiny
**These evaluations of personality measures require reliability, validity, and
generalizability!
