America"s 200th birthday invoked enough national pride to take focus away from. Ronald reagan battled ford for the party"s nomination. Ford won the nomination but his race with reagan hurt him in the polls. Focused on being an outsider from the corruption in washington. He won some early open primaries reducing the influence of more prominent. His lead in the polls vanished during the closing days of the campaign, carter narrowly beat ford with 97% of the african american vote and most of the south. After watergate, the democrats won the majority in both houses of congress. Ended imperial presidency by walking to his inauguration rather than riding to it.
