BIOL 1111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Arthropod, Filter Feeder, Trilobite
Document Summary
Most diverse and abundant group of animals on earth. Thin = joints where easy bending is needed. Important to move from water to land. Feeding strategies: deposit feeding, scavenging, carnivorous predation and filter feeding. Include: horseshoe crabs, sea spiders, spiders, scorpions, ticks and mites. Have bodies divided into two main regions. Spiders are unique b/c they use silk webs for hunting. Inject venom into prey to liquify it. Tear food to bits and swallow them in small pieces. Book lungs: open to outside and provide expanded surface area for blood to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. Feeding strategy: filter feeders, detritivores, carnivores, herbivores, scavengers, ectoparasites, and endoparasites. Lobsters, shrimp, crab, and crayfish = edible. Spiders: keep down numbers of harmful insects. Spiders and scorpions = most venomous organism. Have one pair of legs per segment. Insect = most important invertebrates on lang. Spongers: mouthparts for soaking up and feeding on blood, nectar or other cell fluid.
