Document Summary

All bone in the human body starts out as cartilage and fibrous connective tissue. Embryonic development- you get a framework of cartilage and fibrous connective tissue and as it develops you get bone and this development does not stop until puberty. Until 6-7 week post conception there is no bone: we are born without all of the bone we need in our bodies, babies born without kneecaps. Cartilage tissue is surrounded by a layer of dense irregular connective tissue called perichondrium. Most abundant type of cartilage in the human body. At the ends of bones where there is a joint- articular cartilage (where the bones articulate/meet) In the epiglottis (structure that separates digestive tract from respiratory tract) Extra padding around the ends of the knees: minesci (in knee)- fibrocartilage pads. In between bones of vertebral cartilage: intervertebral discs, growth of cartilage, appositional: the perichondrium lays down new cartilage cells.
