BIOL-4610 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Polymerization, Filamin, Dystrophin
Document Summary
Monomer = globular actin which is very tiny. Important in movement of cells and structures. Actin is a lone protein with atp bound to it. Can have stable form which is capped or a non stable form that goes through treadmilling. During all stages of treadmilling the microfilament is the same length. Myosin binds to actin in polarized manner. Actin is added to + end just like microtubules. Binding pouch with atp can hydrolyze atp to adp which will stabilize the microfilament. W/o stress fibers, the cell would not be able to withstand the tension it is under. Stabilization causes mf to be unable to depolymerize and muscles will freeze up. Filopodia: move actin up to the tip of mf. Thymosin beta-4: binds to monomer and stop it from being added. Profilin: grab hold to monomer with adp which can control the critical concentration of monomers. Exchange = adp thrown off and atp is added.
