Triad of core deficits: communication, socialization, interests and activities. Included as a type pdd because of behavioral similarities with autism. Has emerged as a syndrome distinct from the others on the autism spectrum. Now identified as a genetic disorder linked to a single gene defect. Primarily found in females genetic defect proves fatal in males. 6 to 18 month period of apparently normal development followed by a sudden loss of acquired skills (words & mobility) Loss of hand skills between 15 to 30 months do not use their hands purposefully, bring hands together and engage in continuous hand-wringing motions. This is not most likely to happen when early intervention occurs: more families are experiencing multiple members with an asd than ever before. In some families, parents with an asd were misdiagnosed or never diagnosed. In some families, many or all siblings are on the autism spectrum: the earlier autism disorders are diagnosed and treated the better.
