G C 3460 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Sulfite Process, Bryan Donkin, Screw Press
Document Summary
In the 1690"s paper making was introduced in america. The first paper mill was in germantown, pa rittenhouse mill. By 1776, paper making took place in each of the 13 colonies. Skilled papermakers were exempt from military services during the revolutionary war to supply the army with critically needed paper. The vatman (right) creates the sheet in a mould. The couch (left) transfers the sheet onto a felt. The sheets and felts are stacked into a post. The post is squeezed in a screw press. The sheets are then removed from felts and pressed overnight. The sheets are hung in spurs of 4 5 sheets. By the 18th century, it was obvious that printing would be hindered and stunted unless some method of producing paper in greater abundance and lower cost could be devised. Nicholas louis robert was granted a patent after five years of developing his invention in 1799.
