GEOL-1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Siltstone, Mass Wasting, Risk Assessment
Document Summary
Sedimentary rock is the most common rock type found on the surface of the earth. We come into contact with it most often. It ties in with soil creation and is useful for construction purposes. Almost all fossils are found in sedimentary rock. Coal, oil, natural gas, and other fossil fuels come from sedimentary rocks. How it"s formed: parent rock: starting pre-existing rock that can help create new rock. The parent rock can be any type: step 1: weathering. This is breaking the parent rock into small sedimentary pieces. 2 ways to weather: physical weathering, this means doing something physical with the rock to break it apart. Ex: breaking it with a hammer: nature"s physical weathering. Frost wedging: water gets trapped in the surface of the rock, freezes and expands, melts, and repeats the process until the rock breaks or water disappears.
