Monarch is the head of the church of england (must be protestant) Queen elizabeth i (1558 1603) last of tudor monarchs, dies w/o heir. Scotland: stuarts as whole were doers who wanted reforms. Ranks of aristocracy: duke highest, james is liberal with titles, created baronet hereditary knighthood. James i creates a lot of plantations in ireland. 1541 henry viii declared himself king of ireland. The pale region of ireland where english exercised real authority. Henry vii breaks from catholicism and creates church of england. By the time james comes, only five percent of england is catholic.
