SUBSTANCE RELATED AND ADDICTIVE DISORDERS
*be aware of classes of substances in book and know basic/broad/general symptoms of each
*be aware of the 3 main types of diagnosis
1. ____ Use Disorder - the person has a problematic use of the substance
○ Diagnosed when the person has a problematic pattern of ____ use, leading to
clinically significant impairment or distress
○ The person may take more or larger amounts than they intended
○ Persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down
○ Great deal of time spent in activity to acquire, use or recover
○ The person has a craving for the substance
○ Failure to fulfill role obligations
○ Continued use despite social/interpersonal relationships
i. Problems in relationship because drunk or high all the time
○ Give up important social, occupational, or rec. Activities
○ Recurrent use in situations in which it is hazardous
i. Drunk driving, taking a substance that is likely to kill you
○ Continues despite knowledge of physical/problem psychological makes worse
i. They know smoking tobacco will lead them to have cancer but they
continue to smoke
○ The person may have tolerance
i. Occurs when the person has an increased amount of substance to get
effect
ii. They get diminished effect of the substance
○ The person may have withdrawal if they try to stop
○ All use disorders are all pretty similar

○ Causing chaos in the person’s life
○ Includes dependence

taken, how much of it is taken an when, the user’s tolerance and the
context
○ Only diagnosed when the changes the person experiences are significantly
maladpativekk and substantially disrupt the person’s social and personal
relationships, cause job/financial issues, etc.
