Causes:
1. Adjustment Disorder
•diagnosed when someone develops emotional or behavioral
symptoms in response to identifiable stressor
•they usually come in and tells you what happened
o ex: breakup of a relationship, lost of a job
•within 3 months, the person develops market distress or significant
impairment that is well beyond what you would think to be typical
o ex: getting dumped by one you love, crying is typical, but
three months later crying daily is not typical
•starts within 3 months and up to 6 months later
•**** in response to a TYPICAL stressor****
2. Reactive Attachment Disorder
3. Disinhibited social engagement Disorder
•both (2 & 3) are diagnosed are diagnosed with a child
neglect or deprivation; having a caretaker that doesn’t care
well for you
o ex: being raised in an orphanage and being ignored
99% of the time
4. Acute Stress Disorder
•happens within 3 days & up to one month
•sypmtoms of:
o intrusion- person going through life and then suddenly it feels
like the event is happening again
o negative mood- inability to experience positive emotions
o dissociate Sx- the person has an altered sense of reality or
they’re unable to recall something important about the event
o avoidance Sx- avoid distressing thoughts, memories, or
emotions
o arousal Sx- may have sleep disturbance, irritable behavior, or
anger outburst, or problems with concentrations
5. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
•diagnosed when the person has something that has happened for
more than 1 month
•must have 1 or more intrusion Sx
•must have 1 or more persistent avoidance Sx
•may have 1 or more negative alterations in cognition or mood
•may have 1 or more marked alterations in arousal and reactivity
*** both (4 & 5) are traumatic stressor and traumatic stressor
definition is the person has had exposure to actual or threatened
death, serious injury, or sexual violation.***
