The typical roles for men as breadwinners and women as homemakers are no longer as prevalent in the u. s. One one level, we might believe in equality between men and women. On the other hand, we have deeply engrained values and beliefs based on tradition: differences between men and women: They do exist, but there are many explanations as to why: essentializing: thinking and speaking as if all women are alike and all men are alike. Gender and sex: the two terms are often used interchangeably, but have different de nitions, sex: classi ed by biological characteristics. Designation of sex is usually based on genitalia and sex organs. Sex is determined by chromosomes and in uenced by hormones.
