SPCM 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Intertextuality, Lightning
Document Summary
Intertextuality: the way that texts refer to other texts: text are messy because we can never truly work out their borders. Paratexts: elements that form a frame for the main text. The "shot: purpose is to aid understanding of story and enhance it, preserves continuity of space & time, meant to be "invisible" & immediately understood. The shot: most basic element of recorded visual art. In any shot, a wealth of information is available. Composition: serves as comment or critique, meaning hinges on degree (distance, angle, framing, focus, illumination) The shot: meaning is not absolute; dramatic context is key, context: the parts of a discourse that surround a word, passage, or scene and can shed light on its meaning, subtext: implied meaning -> subtle. "things placed in the scene: totality of expressive content: setting, composition (lightning, framing), costume, behavior. Studio : permanent buildings, facades, or space for (temporary) set construction: more control.
