Idea that the thing that we are suppressing comes up more afterwards rebound effect. Related to restoring body: rem is interesting because waves are similar to waves when awake. Dreaming state, rapid eye movement, sleep paralysis. Individuals who are deprived of rem sleep show lower level of learning. Cycles of sleep, duration of each cycle varies from people to people. Alcohol is kind of depressants: dreams form. Expectancy theory: idea that alcohol effects can be pronounced by people"s expectations of how alcohol will influence them in particular situations. Even if alcohol is not there, the expectancy of alcohol affects behavior. Stimulants: substances that excite the cns, heightening arousal and activity levels. Types include caffeine, amphetamines, nicotine, cocaine, and ecstasy (mdma) Stimulants elicit euphoria and confidence/motivation (increase da and ne in brain: narcotics, hallucinogens, marijuana. Narcotics (opiates)l highly addictive drugs derived from opium that relieve pain: drug properties are closely related to the endorphins.
