Lec 20 - mon 11/7 - climate change i: professor charles. Us accounts for 20% of global energy consumption. Projected energy consumption is driven by increasing population, increased desire for better living standards. 2050 - we are still going to be getting most of our energy by fossil fuels --> but we better hope this isn"t right. Oil, natural gas, coal -- enabled industrial revolution. Natural gas, oil, fossil fuels will all run out probably in the next century. We are in the years of living dangerously. Whole greenland ice sheet melts -- increase of sea level by 6m. Melting of west antarctic -- 8m sea level rise. Melting of all glaciers, ice sheets, ice shelves -- sea level rise 80m. Need to reduce co2 concentration to under 350 ppm in order to prevent anything drastic to change with sea levels. End of this century: sea level rise of 1-3m. Hurricane sandy caused flooding a little more than this.
