Dura mater outermost membrane, tough, dense connective tissue. Arachnoid soft, thin membrane, resembles spiders web: csf cerebral spinal fluid, keeps brain buoyant, removes waste. Pia mater deepest layer, adheres directly to outer surface of brain, clear & thin. Cns central nervous system: brain weighs 3 lbs, grey matter: unmyelinated, white matter: myelinated. White matter is deep to grey matter in the cerebrum & cerebellum, but superficial to grey matter in the spinal cord: cerebrum fig 16. 7 & 16. 8. Longitudinal fissure separates cerebrum into l & r. R cerebral hemisphere space & pattern, artistic, imagination, music. Frontal under frontal bone, responsible for many higher functions: intellect, creativity, language, social awareness, abstract reasoning. Parietal under parietal bone, receives and interprets sensation. Temporal under temporal bone, separated form frontal & parietal by lateral fissure, primary auditory center, formation of language. Occipital under occipital bone, primary visual area. Central sulcus posterior border of frontal lobe.
