Its signal enters bloodstream so all cells see signal, cells with the receptor will respond to the hormone secreted to cause a response. Slow system, secreting and relying on circulatory system for transfer. Cells affected are much more specific and nearby. Neuron secretes signal to nearby target cell. Glands: endocrine functions, can be localized within hormone. Specialized cells within other organs: specialized cells in liver have endocrine function because can generate hormones. Neurons: generate neurohormones produced by neurons, released in bloodstream and use circulation to travel to various sites. Alter gene expression and protein synthesis: change transcription/translation, e. g. Alter existing proteins: converting from inactive to active state, e. g. change rates of enzymatic reactions.
