Strengthening the scientific standing of psychology behaviorism and cognitive psychology. Perception of psychology in the usa beginning of 20th century. May 14th 2017: extensive laboratory expansion, 1892: american psychological association (apa) was founded forum to meet and discuss their findings. Usa was one of the first countries where eugenics had a strong impact. Eugenics is a social philosophy claiming that the fate of a nation can be improved by selective breeding of its inhabitants: started with galton. Americans believed in the importance of the environment. As country of immigrants, were convinced that human characteristics and achievements were not solely due to inheritance but depended on environment. Increasing number of american psychologists started to call themselves functionalists and to take distance from the european tradition, which they identified with the introspective study of consciousness and structuralism. Attraction to functionalist approach also because of problems with the experimental psychology. Most psychology laboratories were set up within philosophical and theological institutes.
