JOUR 001 Lecture 4: JOUR 001 - LEC4
Document Summary
Episodic tells story of one person; no on-going issue. Thematic tells on-going problem that will need to be solved. Easier to place blame/ find the cause. Negative = smoking can kill you, cause cancer and fatal lung. Positive = campaign showing someone that quit and that you can disease to. People pay more attention to negative messages. Positive messages are more personal aka can cause immediate action. Effective when action is something noticed in public (example: smoking) Effective for something we don"t have an audience for. Episodic (specific event) versus thematic (reported within general context) When exposed to a decision/judgment people do not take all relevant information and weigh all outcomes. Exposure to communication activates thoughts stored in the mind of audience member. The content triggers concepts, thoughts, and moods already acquired. Message content is reinforced by the related thoughts and concepts it brings to mind. Media communication, language, can all do this.
