PSY 005 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Motivation, Social Comparison Theory
Document Summary
Overjusti cation effect: the case whereby people view their behaviour as caused by compelling extrinsic reasons, making them underestimate the extent to which their behaviour was caused by intrinsic reasons. Replacing intrinsic motivation with extrinsic motivation makes people lose interest in the activity they initially enjoyed. Rewards will undermine interest only if interest was high initially. Ex. if a child has no interest in reading, then getting him or her to read by offering free pizzas is not a bad idea, because there is no initial interest to undermine. Task-contingent rewards: rewards that are given for performing a task, regardless of well that task is done. Performance-contingent rewards: rewards that are based on how well we perform a task. This is less likely to decrease interest in a task (than task-contingent rewards) because it conveys the message that you are good at the task.
