PSY 005 Lecture Notes - Lecture 29: Group Dynamics, Social Loafing, Psy
Document Summary
Even if a group has all the available information, group members must process that information and use it to make judgments or perform tasks. In general, groups are susceptible to the same information-processing biases as individuals only more so. Verlin hinsz concluded, if some bias, error, or tendency predisposes individuals to process information in a particular way, then groups exaggerate this tendency. However, if this bias, error, or tendency is unlikely among individuals processing the information (e. g. , less than half the sample), then groups are even less likely to process information in this fashion . Groups that develop good transactive memory systems are able to do this well, for example, by recognizing who knows what in the group, and this improves group performance significantly. Groups of researchers have found a variety of factors that promote better group dynamics, such as through better sharing of information and utilization of expertise.
