B/c of overcrowding and understaffing, emphasis shifted from giving humanitarian care to keeping order. Many patients not only didn"t improve but actually developed more symptoms from being there. Physical aggressiveness loss of interest in personal appearance and functioning. Premise is that institutions cannot help patients unless they can create a social climate, or milieu, that promotes productive activity, self respect, and individual responsibility. Rewarded when they behave acceptably and are not rewarded when they behave unacceptably. 1950s revolutionized treatment for schizo; these drugs eliminate many of its symptoms and today are almost always a part of treatment.
