Document Summary

Gametes are cells that are sex cells i. e. sperm and eggs. 2 cell types: gamete (greek meaning to marry , somatic (greek meaning body ) Eggs and sperm meet inside the body of one of the parents and develop (usually female) Can be facilitated by intromittent organ or a spermatophore. Somatic cells are cells that are not gametes e. g. muscles, nerves, blood, ect. Protected from predators/ higher chance of surviving until birth. Harder to bring both male and female into intimate contact. Limited amount of offspring being produced at any given time. Higher risk of sexually transmitted diseases being passed on. Eggs and sperm and dispersed into the medium (air or water usually) A lot of gametes go unused/ wasted. Less change of gametes meeting (sperm meeting egg) Contain of one set of unpaired chromosomes (1n) Egg (1n) and sperm (1n) fuse to form a zygote (2n) Fertilization membrane forms after sperm penetrates the egg.
