L1- Appropriate Words
• Formal and Informal Words
o Use informal words when talking with friends
o Use formal words in academic and professional settings
o Ex. A lot of Many high school kids students have so little time for lunch that they
end up gobbling down their food eating as they race to class.
• Pretentious Language
o Long or complicated words sound too pretentious and stuffy
o Ex. Subsequent to After adopting the new system, managers averred claimed that
their staff worked synergistically together in a way that exceeded parameters
better than expected.
• Jargon
o Resist temptation to use overly technical language
o EX. The mini sternotomy small incision at the lower end of the sternum resulted
in satisfactory cosmosis breastbone preserved her appearance.
• Clichés
o Expressions so familiar that they have become trite
o Ex. The company needs a recruiter who thinks outside the box unconventionally.

• Be and Do
o Don’t rely on be or do
o Ex. Some doctors no longer believe that doing solving crossword puzzles can
delay the onset of senility of Alzheimer’s desease.
• Abstract and Concrete Words
o Abstract words refer to general qualities or ideas- truth, beauty
o Concrete words refer to specific things that can be perceived with our senses-
books, lipstick
• Figurative Language
o Makes it easier to compare things

• Phrase that has a different meaning that that of the words that make it up (Ex. It’s raining
cats and dogs)

• Accept, except
o Accept: accept an award
o Except: all the languages except English
• Affect, effect
o Affect: verb- stress can affect health
o Effect: the effects of smoking are well known
L5- Prepositions
• Followed by a noun or pronoun
• At home
• At the gym
• On Wednesday
