Example:
There are 62 children in a room. There are 8 more boys than girls in the room. How many boys are in the
room? How many girls are in the room?
Girls
Boys
6
6+8 = 14
2
2+8= 10
4
4+8=12
x
x+8
Let x be the number of girls-
Formula you want to use: x+(x+8) = 62
Solve: x + x + 8 = 62
2x+8=62
2x+8-8=62-8
2x=54
2x divided by 2 = 54 divided by 2
X=27
If there are 35 boys, then there are 27 girls. There are 62 children total and 8 more boys than
girls just as the problem stated.
