Discrimination: Tips and Tricks for Dealing
When you choose to raise an adopted child, you will already face unique challenges, but when
you are an LGBT couple, there are additional same-sex parenting issues and difficulties you’ll
need to prepare for.
Be prepared for addressing these challenges in a positive way, both before and after a
child is placed with you.
Know that there are agencies that accept people in the LGBTQ community.
Focus on your values and strengths, who you are as a person will help get you through
the difficult times.
Do not dwell because ruminating the situation can put stress on you. It is best to talk
about it with your partner and/or family, then move on.

Statistics
The 2000 U.S. Census estimated that 115,000 American same-sex households were
raising children.
An estimated 65,000 adopted children are living with same sex parents, that’s 4% of all
adopted children in the United States.
More than 16,000 adopted children are living with lesbian and gay parents in California,
the highest number in the United States.
Joint same-sex adoption is legal in all 50 states of the U.S.
LGBT couples are 4 timeGrowing up in a gay household cannot make a child gay. Most
gays and lesbians grew up in straight / heterosexual households.
Children of same-sex couples show no difference in general health, emotional
difficulties, coping and learning behavior than those children of opposite-sex couples.
Good parenting is not influenced by sexual orientation. Good parenting is influenced by
the parent’s ability to create a loving and nurturing home.
On average gay parents tend to be more motivated and committed parents than
heterosexual parents because they chose to be parents.
