The book defines argument as discourse that attempts to persuade, and it lists three components: the subject, writer, and audience. Aristotle essentially analyzed the different kinds of appeals and arguments used in debate. It occupies the rhetorical (writer to audience) relationship, obviously. To start with, he categorized two types of appeal, with a third category adding to our reception of those appeals. -intelligence the speaker is knowledgeable on the subject. Ethos is the characteristics that make us trust the speaker. -the example, or induction generalizing from specifics (specific to general) -the enthymeme, or deduction applying a generalization to a specific instance. Aristotle also described a type of logical argument that we still use today the syllogism.
