Document Summary

In the early 70"s arisic spirit, technology, social climate and big business all helped to reshape black pop. The hopes of the 60"s were replaced by disillusionment and the conservaism of the nixon administraion. The overall mood of black lyrics had change/evolved to explore darker, more serious issues. This relects the maturaion and the more secure posiion of top arists (marvin gaye, stevie wonder, etc. ) Unlike much white music of the ime, black music had more incongruiies between words and music (it"s hard to convey a dark mood in the lyric with an upbeat rhythm behind it) These rhythms are, however, relecing the essence of a culture, a reclaiming of african roots. Driven by the success of motown and soul, black pop became more diverse and expanded its presence. Other songwriters/producers took the motown idea in diferent direcions. In spite of the integrated nature of the 60"s scene, music in this ime became more segregated.
