Document Summary

English: modern literature, poetry of first world war. World at the front of the war and the world of war at home. Split in his work between military hierarchy and an ordinary solider. Young troops going to their deaths vs. old men ordering them to their deaths. Sassoon doesn"t like how life continues as usual, doesn"t like patriotic propaganda. He is scornful about the role the women play (in the ideological structure of war that their role is to support men, admire their heroism, to embody the values for which the men fight) Women have believed a myth of war that has to do with heroism, decoration, etc. Glory women believe in is part of the falsehood that have sustained the war beyond any point to an end game of destruction. Women had no real sense of what war was about.
