Document Summary

Meandering river: river that winds back and forth in gently sloping terrain, depositing sediment on the inside of each curve (point bar), and eroding sediment on the outside (cutbank). The coarsest sediments will be found in the channel deposit. Higher the energy, the larger the grain size. The finest grained sediments will be found in the floodplain deposit. Floodplain: lowland area adjacent to the river where fine-grained sediments are deposited when the river overflows its banks. Facies changes from the channel to the floodplain reflects a laterally fining sequence. (coarse grained sands, pebbles, and cobbles in the channel; cross-bedded sands on the point bar; and fine grained muds on the floodplain) Delta: fan-shaped body of sand, silt and clay that forms when a river empties into either a lake or the sea. Delta plain: land side of the plain. In depositional environments, you could find coals, lenses of sandstones with unidirectional cross bedding, shales with brackish water fossils.
