HIST 1018 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Encomienda, Europeanisation
Document Summary
The spaniards were able to terrorize their opponents. Firing weapons at long distance was a successful tactic. -they didn"t win because they were better or stronger or had more weapons, thought to be gods, etc. They won because of the way they fought, what they were willing to do to bring people under authority. Native people fought for sacred reasons - fought to beat up a person honorably, scare away the opponent. Surrendering (giving up due to defeat) wasn"t common. Neither side took under consideration what the other were doing. Europeans couldn"t figure out why native people did what they were supposed to do. Europeans felt racist ideas and saw themselves as superior to native. There was a division between race and the produce of the encounter. -the spaniards ideas from pre-existing dispositions, they were just re-enforced. They had to force the natives to surrender.
