Three study designs that enable you to determine values of the variables in a different way: carry out an observational study where the values of the variable(s) of interest are recorded as they naturally occur. Involves recording variables" values that naturally happened in the past. We can assess the relationship between the variables by comparing the proportions using a two-way table and conditional percentages: difference: Observational: individuals are divided based upon the method by which they choose. Researcher does not assign the values of the explanatory variable but rather records them as they occur naturally. Experiment: the researcher deliberately assigns one of the methods to each individual sample. Controls the explanatory variable then assesses its relationship with the response variable. Causation and observational studies: weakness of most observational studies: some members of the sample have opted for certain values of the explanatory variable (method of quitting), while others have opted for other values.
