Parasomnias - sleep disorders involving abnormal movements - somnambulism, somniloquy, night terrors, sleep eating and nrem parasomnias, sleep paralysis and rem sleep behavior disorder are rem parasomnias. Hypersomnia (narcolepsy) - excessive sleepiness and/or uncontrollable falling asleep at inappropriate times. Is accompanied by perceived daytime impairment or distress. Can take many forms - difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, poor quality of sleep. Approximately 6-10% of people may be having insomnia at any given time. May be caused by damage to the vlpo hypothalamus or overactivation of the reticular activating system, lateral hypothalamus or basal forebrain. Excessive sleepiness and sleep attacks at inappropriate times. May occur as a result of damage to the reticular activating system or lateral hypothalamus - one cause is autoimmune destruction of lh neurons. About 1% of people suffer from narcolepsy.
