How identity develops within the context of relationships and society. Development involves stages characterized by a challenge or crisis. Successful resolution prepares a person for next stage. Every stage has a crisis label; something good vs. something bad. The lines between stages are blurry and they often wave into one another. Like attachment theory, the first relationship with primary caregiver is crucial. Walking (first steps usually at 1 years old) which means they can get themselves to something that they want. Erikson: the child"s environment must back him up in his wish to stand on his own two feet . Create actual scenarios (who gets to be what, dress up play, etc. ) Eager to try new tasks, make plans, persevere. If criticized or punished excessively this can result in guilt. Learning to feel competent at valued activities. Inferior: feeling less than everyone else and not capable. Different in different families depending on what your parents value.
