Lecture 19
Regulation of Secretion
o Movement of a substance from plasma into the nephron tubule after filtration has
taken place
o Mechanism for kidney to add to glomerulus filtration that kidney from to
eliminate
o Is always going to be against the concentration gradient
o This will always be active transport
Active transport
Secondary active transport
Symporters and antiporters
o
o Proximal Tubule vs Distal Tubule
Proximal tubule is set up to function for reabsorption, secretion, etc. in an
automatic way
Regulated by the kidney, outside factor does not influence it
Proximal tubule is always happening
In distal tubule, reabsorption, secretion, etc. are often regulated by external
factors such as hormones

So, when kidney can vary what it’s reabsorbing or secreting, there
is an extrinsic regulation in distal tubule and collecting duct
o
o In the basolateral membrane, the potassium ATPase that maintain low
intracellular sodium concentration.
The low concentration of sodium can be coupled with transporter in apical
membrane for transporting other ions
One transporter the low intracellular sodium drive is the antiporter for
sodium going into the cell and H+ going out of the cell
The secretion of H+ is a secondary active transport

o The kidney does not generate water
o Kidney does not add water to the total volume, the best it can do is minimize
water lost
Three Generalizations
o Na+ reabsorption is an active process
o H2O reabsorption is by osmosis (diffusion) and will follow Na+ reabsorption
(when possible)
o Na+ reabsorption and H2O reabsorption are independently regulated
Active Reabsorption of Na+
